Commuting From Brantford to the GTA

A sourced guide for Toronto-area buyers thinking about a move west: the drive, VIA Rail, GO Bus, schools, and what to check before you buy.

    Brantford at a glance

Brantford is a city of 104,688 people in the 2021 census, up 6.2% from 2016. It sits on the Grand River with direct access to Highway 403, and the City projects further growth, with about 163,000 residents by 2041. Within the city there are more than 70 km of trails in town and along the Grand River.

    Driving

Brantford sits on Highway 403, which connects it to Hamilton, Burlington and Woodstock. Destination Ontario describes the city as about an hour's drive from Toronto by Highway 403. A travel planner lists the road distance to Toronto at roughly 104 km and the drive from the Brant area at about 1 hour 20 minutes outside rush hour.

Treat those as best-case numbers. Like any commuter corridor, Highway 403 can back up at peak times, and the City has flagged congestion where the 403 and Lincoln Alexander Parkway meet. Before you commit, drive your real route on a weekday morning and again on the way home.

    By train: VIA Rail

Brantford is on CN's Windsor to Quebec rail corridor, which carries VIA Rail passenger trains. Travel planners list a direct VIA train from Brantford to Toronto Union Station taking roughly 70 minutes, with several departures a day. Confirm times and fares on viarail.ca, because VIA runs a handful of trains each day and not every one fits a standard work schedule.

    By GO Transit

GO Bus Route 15 links the Brantford Bus Terminal with Aldershot GO Station in Burlington, with stops that include McMaster University. At Aldershot you connect to the Lakeshore West train, which continues to Union Station. The published timetable, effective December 20, 2025, lists both weekday and weekend service. Use the GO Transit trip planner for exact times, since they change with each schedule update.

    Who the commute suits

If you travel to the GTA every day, the drive or a GO and train combination is a real commitment, so test it first. If you work a hybrid schedule and go in a few days a week, the VIA train or an off-peak drive can be much more manageable. Either way, the best test is to do the trip yourself, at your hours, before you buy.

    Housing costs and taxes

The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board reported an average selling price of $973,289 across the GTA in January 2026. For current Brantford pricing, see the board benchmark prices on Jake's Brantford page, which are updated from the live board feed.

Ontario charges a land transfer tax on every purchase. The City of Toronto adds its own municipal land transfer tax on top. Brantford does not. The Buyer's Guide walks through closing costs and the Ontario tax.

    Schools and daily life

Public English schools in Brantford are run by the Grand Erie District School Board, and Catholic English schools by the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. French-language boards also serve the area. If you are moving from another board, check the assigned schools for each address you are considering, because assignments depend on the exact property and can change.

Day to day, Brantford has the Grand River and its trail network, a Wilfrid Laurier University campus, a regional hospital, and Brantford Transit for local trips.
