History
Burford's history dates to 1793, when it was founded by Abraham Dayton, a farmer and miller from Connecticut. Its own community history calls it one of the oldest centres of settlement in the interior of southwestern Ontario and the oldest Euro-American settled community in the County of Brant. The first post office opened in 1819.
The village sits on the old route that became Highway 53, which historic accounts describe as one of the oldest trails in the region.
The village today
Burford's downtown is the intersection of Maple Avenue and King Street, which is Highway 53. It has a stop light, several small businesses and a post office. The County of Brant's administrative offices are in Burford, and it is one of the county's service hubs.
Getting around
Burford is 8 km west of Brantford along Highway 53 and about 70 km east of London. See the Commuter Guide for the Highway 403, VIA Rail and GO Bus options from the Brantford area.
Schools
Paris District High School serves as a regional secondary school for communities across Brant County, including Burford.
Public English schools in the area are run by the Grand Erie District School Board, and Catholic English schools by the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. French-language boards also serve the area.
School assignments depend on your exact address and can change. Always confirm the assigned schools for a specific property with the school board before you make an offer.
