The river and its history
The Grand River divides Caledonia into north and south sides. The first Caledonia Dam was built between 1836 and 1842 by the Grand River Navigation Company, and its contractor, Ranald McKinnon, is known as the town's founder. The original dam was replaced with a concrete one between 1928 and 1930, and the Grand River Conservation Authority built the current dam in 1980 and still maintains it.
The Grand River Bridge on Argyle Street, built in 1927, is described as the only nine-span bridge of its kind in Canada and is designated by Haldimand County.
The town today
Caledonia lies at the intersection of Highway 6 and Haldimand Highway 54, which are called Argyle Street and Caithness Street in town. The Caledonia Fair is one of its annual events. Haldimand County reports a 2021 population of 49,216 across the whole county.
Getting around
Caledonia is about 15 km east of Brantford on Highway 54, which follows the Grand River Valley, and about 10 km west of Cayuga. See the Commuter Guide for the transit and highway options from the Brantford area.
Schools
Public English schools in the area are run by the Grand Erie District School Board, and Catholic English schools by the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. French-language boards also serve the area.
School assignments depend on your exact address and can change. Always confirm the assigned schools for a specific property with the school board before you make an offer.
