History
Simcoe is named for John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, who visited in 1795 and granted milling privileges to Loyalist settler Aaron Culver. A hamlet grew around the mill, and Simcoe was incorporated as a village in 1851 and a town in 1878. It became the county seat in 1850 and in 2001 was amalgamated with Delhi, Norfolk and half of Nanticoke to form Norfolk County.
A regional centre
Simcoe serves the surrounding area as a retail and service centre. Agriculture, including tobacco, fruit and vegetables, is a major part of the local economy, and manufacturing and services are growing in importance.
Major local events include the Friendship Festival, the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show, and the winter Panorama light show.
Getting around
Simcoe sits where Highway 3 meets Highway 24, due south of Brantford. It is about 56 km southwest of Hamilton. See the Commuter Guide for how the trips from the Brantford area work.
Schools
Public English schools in the area are run by the Grand Erie District School Board, and Catholic English schools by the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. French-language boards also serve the area.
School assignments depend on your exact address and can change. Always confirm the assigned schools for a specific property with the school board before you make an offer.
