History and role
Cayuga was incorporated as a village in 1859 and became the county seat of Haldimand County because of its central location. Haldimand County's administration office is still in Cayuga, and the original county seat status is part of why the town has kept its civic role.
The Highway 3 bridge over the Grand River was long a symbol of the county. It was replaced with a concrete bridge in 2014. On February 13, 2009, ice melt flooded the Grand River and damaged parts of the town, so ask about flood risk on any riverside property.
Getting around
Highway 54 follows the Grand River Valley from Brantford to Highway 3 in Cayuga, and it winds along the river, so allow extra time compared with a straight highway. Cayuga is about 10 km east of Caledonia on Highway 54. See the Commuter Guide for the transit options from the Brantford area.
Schools
Public English schools in the area are run by the Grand Erie District School Board, and Catholic English schools by the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. French-language boards also serve the area.
School assignments depend on your exact address and can change. Always confirm the assigned schools for a specific property with the school board before you make an offer.
